Another
Israeli site hacked by m0r0n & nightman of the
TULKAREM, West Bank --
Residents of this city awoke Monday to find Israeli tanks and armored
cars roaming the streets.
Just before dawn,
Israeli forces re-entered Tulkarem in the first such major operation
since the Six Day War in 1967.
Several Palestinians
fired on the tanks. Israelis fired back with machine guns. One
Palestinian died.
Meanwhile, tanks
rolled into the West Bank town of Nablus for a similar operation against
militants. In Ramallah, two Palestinians died in clashes with Israeli
troops that have surrounded Yasser Arafat's compound.
Tulkarem, just across
the line that separates Israel from the West Bank, is within striking
distance of Israel cities. ''
Arafat said the
Israeli move ''crossed all the red lines.'' Speaking in Ramallah, he
said, ''Our people will never keep silence about all of these Israeli
attacks.''
For the past month,
Israel has barred Arafat from leaving Ramallah.
United Nations
Secretary-General Kofi Annan criticized Israel on Monday for blowing up
a Palestinian radio and TV station in Ramallah on Saturday and taking
over Tulkarem.
Israel has raided
areas ruled by Palestinians many times since the intifada began in
September 2000. But Monday marked the first time Israeli forces took
control of an entire major Palestinian community since self-rule began
in 1994.
Three tanks stood in
Abdel Nasser Square at the center of Tulkarem on Monday as Israeli
special forces conducted house-to-house searches. Local Palestinians
said eight people had been arrested. In one area, soldiers guarded four
handcuffed and blindfolded Palestinians lying on the floor of a room.
So Sharon
